Study Tip: How to know if it’s an Addition Word Problem
➕ Addition Word Problems: We use addition when:
- We put things together.
- We get more things.
- We need to find how many in all / in total / altogether.
1. Look for “joining” or “putting together”
If the question is about adding things, collecting more, or joining groups, it’s addition!
Example 1:
Riya has 5 apples. Her friend gives her 3 more.
We are putting apples together → Addition!
5 + 3 = 8 apples
2. Find clue words
These magic words often tell you it’s addition:
Clue Words | Meaning |
---|---|
in all | total / together |
altogether | total |
total | add everything |
together | add them |
sum | add |
how many in total | addition |
how many altogether | addition |
more | often means we add |
combined | put together |
increase | add to something |
add | literally add |
both | add both things |
altogether now | sum of all |
left + gained | sum of remaining and gained |
plus | add |
join | combine quantities |
together make | sum of quantities |
Example 2:
There are 8 boys and 7 girls in class. How many students in all?
Add 8 + 7 = 15 students
Tip for kids: Look for words that talk about “all,” “together,” “more,” “sum,” or “combined”—these usually mean addition.
If the question sounds like “getting more, joining, adding up, or total,” it’s addition.
If it sounds like “losing, giving away, remaining, or left,” it’s subtraction.
3. Ask yourself: Am I putting things together or taking away?
If you are putting together, it’s addition.
If you are taking away, it’s subtraction.
Addition example:
10 pencils + 5 pencils more = 15 pencils
Subtraction example:
10 pencils − 5 pencils given away = 5 pencils left
4. Imagine the story
Tell the story in your own words:
“I had some. I got more. Now I have more!”
That means it’s addition.
